Hello everyone, Apologies for the late reply; I just saw the initial email. I do SF studies, fandom studies, etc. and I'm a second year in the English PhD program. I came straight from undergrad at The College of Wooster last year, when I taught Foundations of the English Major. This year, I teach rhetoric, and I am doing a course about fandom studies. Outside of academia, I am very involved in fandom, cultural crique for websites like Anime Feminist, and singing. I cannot wait to begin work in the writing center!

Hello! I'm Lei, a second-year grad student in the Nonfiction Writing Program. My favorite kind of writing bridges paradoxes or different worlds: science and religion, spirituality and skepticism, humor and profundity, realism and idealism, mind and heart. I'm teaching for the first time this year an Interpretation of Literature course called Life Lessons, drawing on the few years I spent in Shanghai prior to Iowa, where I was a coach for Chinese high school students to help them figure out what they wanted to do in college/life. I've also worked short stints as a science journalist; a researcher of consciousness; a private investigator (very boring--only sounds cool); a translator; and a fact-checker. Outside of class/work, I like weird non-dogmatic meditations, flowing movement styles (I'm a huge dabbler in dance/martial arts despite being supremely clumsy), and procrastinating via home decor (I really like to help people organize/beautify/throw stuff away!!! ...

Hi Everyone, I’m Kyle Barton, and I’m in my final year of the English PhD program (striving to complete that dissertation!). This is my fifth year of teaching Interpretation of Literature here. Prior to coming to Iowa, I got my Masters in Education and student taught at a local high school in Lowell Massachusetts. I'm also currently the head TA for the Foundations of the English Major course. In my own academic writing, I focus on Victorian literature, particularly poetry. Outside of academia, I love to cook, watch and discuss movies with friends, and spend time with my cat, Ella. Looking forward to our class together and getting to know all of you better!

Hi all! I'm Amelia Gramling. I'm a second year student in the nonfiction writing program, and I like to write about visionaries and intentional communities, usually about men who try and fail to create utopias. I'm interested in gender, particularly masculinity and sexuality studies. I teach General Education Literature at Iowa, and I've taught creative writing in the past. I like to travel, and I really love spending time with my family and friends, most of which are a few states away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. My sister and I are planning a trip to visit our oldest brother in Thailand hopefully this spring. Thanks! -Amelia

Hi all, I'm EmmaJean, a second-year MFA student in the Nonfiction Writing Program. I'm teaching for the first time this year, in Gen Ed Lit. In terms of writing interests, I love essays that blend research with personal narrative. I'm also interested in different forms of journalism and cultural critique. In my non-work/study time, I enjoy playing guitar (BADLY), making messes in my kitchen that I don't clean up for a really long time, and playing with my two pet rats. Looking forward to meeting everybody! EmmaJean

Hi class, I worked as a peer writing tutor as an undergrad at a small liberal arts college in Hartford, CT and then as a transfer at a medium-small public college in Providence, RI, and it was the best job I ever had. I'm thrilled to meet a new writing center and its inhabitants! As you might guess, I'm a born and raised New Englander, a wicked great region. Originally from Lil' Rhody, I moved to Iowa City last year with my partner for my MA/PhD in sociocultural (medical) anthropology after three years living in a co-op house in Boston and working in health services research at that city's veterans' medical center. This summer I confirmed my field site: Anchorage, Alaska. My research uses a transnational feminist lens to explore how the many, diverse women veterans living in Anchorage make spaces for care (broadly defined) outside the clinic but indoors, as temperature extremes from climate change drive wilderness enthusiasts inside. As an anthropologist and sto...

Hi! I'm Elizabeth and I'm in my second year at the School of Library and Information Science. I have been working at the SEAM in the main library helping undergraduates with research. I love it! I wanted a chance to learn more about writing tutoring since I'm looking to go into Academic Librarianship. I'm interested in the ways that research and writing are all intertwined. I really am fascinated by academic writing, the ways it has changed and is changing and it's formulations. As for non-academic writing, I love the essay form, journaling, and have been slowly working on a creative collage (?) about melancholy. My BA is in English literature and I hope to continue on to an English program at some point. I really enjoy hiking (but I don't do much of that here). In my free time I usually am cooking, baking, and aspiring to read more.

Hi Writing Center Class: Looking forward to working with you and getting to know you! About me: I earned my Master's in Linguistics-TESOL and my doctorate in English: Language, Literacy, and Rhetoric--at the U of Illinois at Chicago. I've been a Rhetoric prof and WC Director for over 28 years! My academic writing is about second language issues related to the writing center; our current WC project is about Iowa's international students' perceptions of their second language writing development; I will be sharing some of it with you in class. I also like to write creatively and personally about travel and language-learning and teach travel writing as a first-year seminar every fall.In my free time, I hang out with my granddaughters, 9 and almost 2. The older one and I are currently finishing the last book in the Penderwick series about a large New England family.
